Pumps for acids and alkalis

Acid transfer is the main search behind chemical pumps. Tube and shaft materials follow concentration.

• Polypropylene (PP) + F 424 / F 430: hydrochloric to 30%, phosphoric to 50%, sulphuric to 40%, fruit acids, alkalis. Sealless F 424 holds hydrochloric and chromic acid well.

• PVDF + Hastelloy C shaft + F 430 / F 458 motor: hydrofluoric to 40%, sulphuric to 90%, chloric acid, hypochlorite, nitric within the FLUX list.

• Immersion centrifugal pump F 640 / F 716: diluted sulphuric in a pickle tank and electrolyte circulation.

Do not put ordinary stainless steel on a concentrated acid. That is why the concentrated-acid kit uses PVDF and Hastelloy.

Acids and bases, formic acid, acetic acid, ammonia, pickling solutions, photochemicals, cleaners, solvents, perchloroethylene, hydrocarbons, dispersions, emulsifiers, silicones, adhesives, firefighting foam, demineralised water, sodium chloride solutions, brake fluids.

FLUX field examples

Formic acid from a 1 000 l tote. COMBIFLUX FP 314 and battery motor FBM-B 3100: small batches, no wall socket, the tube stays in several totes.

Sulphuric acid in electroplating. A cordless drum pump for canister top-up. Pickling tank: immersion centrifugal pump F 640. Bath circulation: F 716.

Concentrated acids. Factory kit F 430 PVDF: concentrated acids do not forgive an ordinary pump — that is why FLUX specifies PVDF and Hastelloy.

FAQ

Which chemical pump for acid in a 1 000 l tote?
Weak and medium acids: PP drum pump F 424 or F 430. Concentrated acids: F 430 PVDF. Immersion length for a tote is usually 1 200 mm.

Can one pump handle several acids?
F 430 with a mechanical seal splits in two without tools and carries less residue. That is better when the medium changes often.

How is a diaphragm pump different from a drum pump?
A drum pump is immersed in the container. An FDM / RFM diaphragm pump sits beside the vessel, self-primes, accepts dry running and solids — a typical process pump for chemicals.
