FieldConnex® Segment Couplers for PROFIBUS PA: Reliable Integration and Power Supply
Segment Couplers of the FieldConnex® series by Pepperl+Fuchs are a critical infrastructure element that ensures transparent and seamless communication between the high-speed PROFIBUS DP trunk (control level) and the intrinsically safe PROFIBUS PA field device level (process level).
These intelligent devices serve a dual function: they act as a data gateway and a power supply for the entire PROFIBUS PA segment.

The main advantage of FieldConnex® Segment Couplers is their transparency.

Minimal Engineering: Due to the transparent coupling, every PROFIBUS PA field device appears to the PROFIBUS DP master as if it were directly connected. This significantly simplifies configuration, addressing, and reduces commissioning time.

High Speed: The couplers support PROFIBUS DP data transfer speeds of up to 1.5 Mbit/s (with auto-adaptation) while ensuring stable operation of PROFIBUS PA at 31.25 Kbit/s, making communication efficient and reliable.

Power and Data on One Cable: The couplers integrate powerful power supplies that deliver both voltage and digital data over a single two-wire cable, supporting the High-Power Trunk standard for maximum trunk length and device count.
Modularity and Reliability
Pepperl+Fuchs offers two main versions of couplers for design flexibility:

Basic Segment Couplers: An "all-in-one" solution, ideal for smaller and simpler applications.

Modular Power Hubs: A motherboard-based solution for powering multiple segments (e.g., four) with the option for redundancy in both the power supply and the gateway module. This ensures the highest system availability in critical processes.
Integrated Diagnostics
Optional connection to Advanced Diagnostics modules allows for remote, continuous monitoring of the physical layer's health (voltage, current, noise level). This enables preventive maintenance and remote troubleshooting, preventing unplanned shutdowns.
