Vortex flowmeters
The OPTISWIRL series from KROHNE consists of reliable vortex flowmeters for measuring the flow of liquids, (wet) gases, saturated and superheated steam. They feature integrated pressure and temperature compensation, energy calculation capabilities, and Advanced Vortex Frequency Detection (AVFD) technology for stable operation in challenging conditions. The series includes models such as OPTISWIRL 4200 (with P+T compensation for energy management), OPTISWIRL 2100 (cost-effective option for basic applications), and OPTISWIRL 5080 (for high temperatures up to +427°C). The instruments are SIL2/3 certified for safety instrumented systems (SIS) and are ideal for the energy sector.
Operating Principle
The flowmeters operate based on the Karman vortex street principle: the medium flows past a bluff body (vortex shedder), generating vortices on both sides. The frequency of vortex shedding is proportional to the flow velocity. A piezoelectric sensor detects these vortices, and the electronics process the signal with adaptive filtering (AVFD). In compensated models (e.g., 4200), integrated pressure and temperature sensors enable direct calculation of mass flow, normalized volume, and thermal energy (gross/net heat).

About KROHNE Company
KROHNE Group is a German family-owned manufacturer of industrial automation instruments and measurement technology, founded in 1921 by Ludwig Krohne in Duisburg (Germany). The company started with producing variable area flowmeters for the metallurgy industry and today is a global leader in flow, level, pressure, temperature, and process analytics measurement. With over 4,100 employees, 16 production sites in 11 countries, and representatives in more than 100 countries, KROHNE is renowned for innovations (e.g., the first Coriolis flowmeters with straight tubes), high quality, and independence — the company reinvests most of its profits and remains family-owned for over 100 years.
