New Generation of SIGNAL Optical Safety Edges from Pepperl+Fuchs
Trusted for over two decades, the SIGNAL optical safety edge delivers maximum safety on industrialdoors and garage doors. Now, the Pepperl+Fuchs brand WITT Sensoric GmbH presents the new generation—equipped with state-of-the-art electronics, minimal energy consumption, and a robustness that can withstand the most extreme environmental conditions.
The new devices automatically adapt to operation with a wireless module or spiral cable. At the same time, the optical system allows for large door widths of up to 12 meters, such as those found in fire stations or logistics centers. Proven in numerous customer applications, the SIGNAL optical safety edge combines highest reliability with a durable design, ensuring safe door systems throughout their entire service life.
Reliable Operating Principle
Sensors for safety are mandatory on garage doors and industrial doors. Pressure-sensitive Category 2 thru-beam sensors such as the SIGNAL12LP or SIGNAL12ECO have shown excellent performance here. Embedded in a robust rubber profile, they reliably monitor the front edge of the door leaf. If the door is closed and the profile is compressed, the signal at the receiver is reduced, causing the evaluation unit to react immediately—the safe stop is triggered via the door control unit.
Wired or Wireless
The SIGNAL optical safety edge offers unmatched flexibility in use—either wired via a spiral cable or completely wireless. Depending on the requirements, it can be connected directly to the door control unit via a junction box or operated via a separate radio module, with no spiral cable needed. Via duo-switch detection method, the SIGNAL automatically adjusts to the respective operating mode: it detects the operating voltage and switches automatically between standard operation with spiral cable and energy-efficient battery operation.
Simplified Maintenance with Integrated Optical Display & Diagnostics
With a self-testing system, the new optical safety edge ensures maximum operational safety: when switched on, it automatically checks all components and the signal quality. Criteria such as the quality of the rubber profile, door width, deviation, and contamination are included in the evaluation. The measurement result is displayed with a flashing code in the range of one to three pulses. Thus, users immediately recognize whether an inspection is necessary. Additionally, the new optical system allows for larger door widths and improved switching behavior when the door is bent, for example due to wind load.

The customized rubber profiles in particular offer optimal flexibility: since there is no standardization in the field of industrial gates, the length, packaging size, and installation readiness can be adapted precisely to individual customer requirements. Pre-cut profiles also ease installation, as no further preparation is required. This means that the right product can be selected quickly and easily and used directly in practice.
