Bearing Temperature Sensors: How to Prevent Fires and Downtime on Elevators and Conveyors

Overheating of bearings is one of the most common causes of fires and emergency stops of bucket elevators, conveyors and transport systems at grain elevators, feed mills and ports. Friction in a bearing quickly leads to heat buildup, which in a dusty environment can cause ignition.

Specialized 4B Braime bearing temperature sensors (UK), supplied by CSC-AUTOMATION, provide a comprehensive solution to this problem.

Main series:

  • ADB — embedded sensors with NTC thermistor. Direct mounting into the bearing housing, high sensitivity (from +3 °C), relay output.

  • Milli-Temp — PT100 with linear 4-20 mA output. Accuracy ±0.5 °C, ideal for PLC/SCADA integration.

  • WDB7 Lug Style — surface-mounted sensors with clamp mounting. No bearing disassembly required.

  • MDB — screwed through the existing grease nipple. Maintain greasing capability without removing the sensor.

  • WDB8 — combined sensors (temperature + speed). Monitor both overheating and belt slip.

Key advantages:

  • Response to overheating from +3 °C

  • ATEX Zone 20/21 — safe for dusty environments

  • IP67/IP68, resistant to vibration and moisture

  • Outputs: relay, 4-20 mA, Modbus

  • Easy installation (boot mount or surface)

  • Payback in 4–6 months through reduced fire and downtime risk

Typical applications:

  • Head and boot bearings of bucket elevators

  • Roller bearings of conveyors

  • Motor and gearbox bearings

  • Grain elevators, feed mills, ports, flour mills

Bearing temperature monitoring is not an optional extra — it is an essential element of fire safety and continuous equipment operation.
